Derek Southall, CEO, Hyperscale Group Limited (Chair)

Our Founder and CEO Derek Southall, is a high profile and very well connected figure in the legal technology, innovation, knowledge management and digital marketplaces and was recently described as the “Doyen of legal IT and Innovation”. Derek has spent nearly 25 years in a range of leading strategic roles for a top 50 global law firm, for most of this time as a Partner and Head of Strategic Development and subsequently as Head of Digital and Innovation. During this period Derek oversaw and helped drive growth from £27 mil TO to in excess of £425 mil TO as well as driving and supporting numerous mergers and international expansion to 18 offices in 10 countries.

Derek was ranked by the FT as one of the top three most innovative lawyers in the UK in its first study into the legal market. Derek also led the firm’s technology team to become ranked by the FT as the most innovative in Europe and subsequently the firm to ranked by the FT as the second most innovative firm in Europe as well as picking up a range of other awards.


Sarah Chipping
Head of IT, RPC Tyche

Sarah has spent the majority of her career working in service delivery roles for law firms, including Clifford Chance, Freshfields and more recently Clyde&Co as Global Head of Service Delivery and at HFW as Head of Service Transformation. Sarah recently joined RPC Consulting as Head of IT which has been a transition in its self, now working for a Fintech business where innovation is at the forefront.

In addition to this Sarah has been instrumental in building the European presence of ILTA (International Legal Technology Association). ILTA is a US based organisation which sets out to be ‘the premier association for technologists in legal’. As part of this work Sarah set up and ran ILTA Special Interest Groups for System Architects/Operations, CISOs, Service Delivery and Knowledge Management. Sarah is extremely well connected in the legal community and excited for the future for law firms.

Sarah will share the changes she is faced with today and where she feels service delivery should be high on any agenda, to open and explore innovation within a business.
Engagement being key – she will provide some tips on how she interacts with the business, internal and external, capturing the right audience for the right topic and how she ultimately supports her users. ‘It’s all around listening, setting ‘realistic’ expectations, transparency and most importantly – Team work’.


Adrian Cambridge
Head of IT Operations, HFW

Adrian Cambridge is a highly experienced IT leader with over 26 years’ experience 11 of which in legal. Adrian is the Global Head of IT Operations for law firm HFW which has 19 offices worldwide. Before working in the legal sector, he was an IT consultant for an IBM business partner working across many industry verticals.

Adrian has worked for law firms Mischon de Reya (in the UK) and Simmons & Simmons and Latham and Watkins in the Middle East. For the last five years he was Head of IT for a local holding company based in Abu Dhabi and part of a team that built four diverse companies from the ground up, designing and implementing their technology offerings. As a member of the management team for each company Adrian gained a more commercial approach to IT service delivery, often being called on to assist with company day-to-day operations, marketing, and contributing to the long term strategy of each company. He was also tasked with delivering commercial, innovative IT solutions for clients based in the UAE and the Maldives.

In August 2019 Adrian joined HFW to head up the global operations team based in the London office. Working closely with the IT Director, he has been tasked with transforming the IT department, systems and support at HFW with a push towards cloud and infrastructure as a service. The firm has demanded a more agile approach that provides the best IT facilities and working environment for employees, allowing HFW to give their clients the highest quality service. Adrian is helping to design IT systems and solutions that are both fit for purpose and commercially viable and allows HFW to interact more closely with clients. A challenge he is relishing.


Adam Ryan, Chief Legal Innovation Officer,
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer

Adam Ryan is the Chief Legal Innovation Officer at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and has a proven track record of implementing a global innovation strategy in professional services. Adam has both a computer science and law background, and practised as a lawyer in the commercial IP team before heading up the firm’s innovation function. Adam leads the firm’s client facing product strategy, heading up a team of legal product owners, developers, project managers and data scientists.
