Drayton Manor incident – comments from Weightmans Health and Safety expert

12th May, 2017 / Legal & Law Firm, News

An investigation is underway after a young girl died after falling from a ride at a Staffordshire theme park. Evha Jannath fell into water whilst on the river rapids Splash Canyon ride at Drayton Manor Park on Tuesday 9 May 2017. The ride, which opened in 1993 and features up to 21 boats each with space for six people, closed following the incident and the Park will be closed until Thursday 11 May. The Health and Safety Executive’s investigation continues.

Chris Green, partner and health and safety expert at national law firm Weightmans, said:

“Key to the HSE’s investigation will be establishing whether what happened at Drayton Manor is a work-related incident or a tragic accident. The health and safety duties on any employer are wide ranging and so investigators will always look into any factors which might form part of the park’s ‘work activity’, including people, processes and equipment.

“The Theme Park industry always looks closely at any incidents which occur and the unfortunate events at Alton Towers in 2015 will have prompted operators across the board to review their safety procedures.

“That incident fairly quickly appeared to concern something going wrong with the ride on the day, whereas this may be something very different. It should also be said that Drayton Manor has been trading for 60 years and has a very good safety record.”
